Fire ESCAPES are a special kind of EXIT often used during EMERGENCIES. But have you noticed modern buildings rarely have fire ESCAPES any more. I wonder why that is!
That's a very good question, and I really haven't given it much thought. Maybe builders don't care any more 'cause fire escapes add to much to the cost. I've always liked them and they do provide good photo ops, as you have shown!
Great photos of the fire Escapes. Maybe, they no longer have them, because.... it makes it easy for someone to break in your apartment? Or what anthonynorth said.
Hmmm, I hadn't thought about that either.... Love all the different fire escape designs. I took lots of pictures of them when we worked in New York City. The ironwork was amazing.
With a husband like mine, who loves fires - I always ensure I know the escape route! Yes - our house has such an escape - not so elaborate but still practical! lol!
I like the icicles hanging down from the fire escape. I wouldn't want to run down that one. It is odd the modern buildings don't have fire escapes. I'd had to be on the 40th floor if a fire was below me and there was no way out.
This post does have me wondering about outdoor fire escapes. Come to think of it they are not built into the newer designs. Perhaps it’s because there are now inner stairs that are more insulated than they used to be and the reliance in emergencies leans more towards built in water sprinkler systems and the breaking of glass to grab a fire extinguisher.
Nice composition in your photos. I think I'd rather be on the outside of a building on a fire Escape, rather than on the inside in a shaft that invites the flames.
I love the red doors :) You are right there aren't fire escapes anymore. I think that might be because of the built in "fire breaks" in the buildings. Doors automatically shut and act as fire barriers and most public buildings have sprinkling systems.
Your second picture reminds me of an apartment I lived in once that had a fire escape outside my windows. I used to crawl out the window to sit on the landing as a balcony, but I never actually used the stairs to escape anything.
Hadn't thought about it, but you are right, the traditional fire escapes seem to be absent from modern buildings. That last fire escape looks pretty dangerous, might be safer inside!
East Gwillimbury is a rural town less than an hour north of Toronto, Canada's largest city.
My family calls me CameraGirl because I take my camera with me wherever I go.

Now that you mention it... interesting that they don't exist. I guess we have improved interior fire doors now?
Three different interesting fire escapes. Keep on clicking.
I love the one with the ice, but hopefully they won't need to use it with all that ice.
That last one looks like it could be treacherous! I had not thought about the lack of fire escapes, but you are so right.
Had never thought about the lack of fire escapes...interesting! The one with the ice looked pretty unsafe!

I think planners think modern buildings cannot go up in flames nowadays. scary.

Have a happy D day.

i guess outdoor fire escapes are not appealing to architects anymore.:p wonderful photos for E.

I hadn't thought about the absence of outdoor fire escapes until now.

What would the world of adventure film have done without the fire-escape?
Nice! great captures!
Excellent choice. We don't get a lot of these here, or icicles.

I guess we have more modern ways to escape? :)
A great idea for a photo shoot... and a reasonable question the ask.
You would probably come down the last one is super quick time, if possibly not in one piece. Great shots.
Great photos of the fire escapes...and what a good idea for E. Those red doors in the first shot really pop. Also love the icy shot.
Those are some huge icicles! And as Roger says, it's good to know where the exits are! :D

Good point. Some of these are quite attractive in their own way too.
Love the color in the first one especially.

Security issues? Good question. Loved the images of the fire escapes. I hardly ever see them. Ever.
I've always loved the look of those fire escapes and the thought of sitting on one of a hot night, watching the street below.
That's a good question; now I'll have to be more observant, especially because they make wonderful photos!
I wouldn't want to go slipping and sliding down the icy one!
I like your collection of fire escapes. You're right - you don't see them that often anymore!
