Welland Canal/ Sunday Bridges

Looking at the west side of the lift bridge at Lock 1 of the Welland Canal

The Welland Canal allows freighters to travel between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, bypassing Niagara Falls.

Looking southerly across the lift bridge

Notice all the lights telling motorists and pedestrians when it's safe to cross the bridge.

Fishers/ Shadow Shot Sunday

Two generation of fishers, Keswick, Ontario

I was intrigued by how the boy's rod and part of the shadow were parallel. And I like the way the dad is gently helping his son.

Tractor/ Sign, Signs

Cameron Welch Mgmt. Ltd.
The sign itself is not that great but I DID notice the tractor above the name of the company and what the company does and THEN I noticed the words on the sign. Sorry about the glare on the sign!

Concrete Arch/ Sunday Bridges

Flashback to the 1930s

There are several bridges over creeks near me that were built in this style, so I cannot remember exactly where I took this photo. Pity about the graffiti but, otherwise, the bridge shown here is in pretty good shape considering its close to 80-years old.

branch/ My Town Shoot Out

Remains of branch attached to overhead wires

This week's My Town Shoot Out Challenge: trees, leaves, branches

No leaves here yet, just buds, so branches are pretty bare. Not only do these branches have no leaves but also no buds, trunks.... But hey! They do have utility wires!

Another cut branch attached to overhead wires

N/ ABC Wednesday

Niagara Apothecary, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

For nearly a century starting in late 1860s, the Niagara Apothecary sold patent medicines and  "miracle cure-alls" for ailments such as tuberculosis and hair loss.  Seven years after the apothecary closed in 1964, the Ontario Heritage Trust acquired the  building, restored it and turned it into a museum.

The facade is Italianate: arched double doors and two show windows. The Sign of the Golden Mortar is an example of high-style commercial architecture during mid-Victorian times.

Garden City Skyway/ Sunday Bridges

Karen Andrie (tug)Endeavor (barge) under the Garden City Skyway, St. Catherines, Ontario

Here the Garden City Skyway spans the Welland Canal, built high to accommodate freighters so the Queen Elizabeth Way doesn't require a lift bridge that would  hold up traffic.

The 42 kilometre (27 mile) Welland Canal bypasses Niagara Falls, allowing ships to travel between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Temple/My Town Shoot Out

Sharon Temple in winter, East Gwillimbury, Ontario

Built between 1825 and 1832, the Sharon Temple is now a national historic site. It was constructed by a small sect or former Quakers who called themselves the Children of Peace who used this building once a month to collect money and items for local people living in poverty.

Sharon Temple in autumn, East Gwillimbury

After the sect's founder died in 1856, the group slowly diminished and the building began to fall apart. Fortunately in 1917, a local historical society decided to restore it and now, along with other buildings on this site, it's a museum.

It's also a National Peace Site. Because the temple boasts of amazing acoustics, classical music concerts are often held here, five this year on Sunday afternoons between May 29 and June 26.

Hard Hat/Mid-Week Blues

Blue hard hat

Look at the BLUE hard hat!

The Welland Canal, which allows commercial boats to travel between Lakes Erie and Ontario (bi-passing Niagara Falls), has been open for business this year since mid-March. Two boats went through the canal on the day my husband and I were there... and we just happened to be there at the right time. (Early April traffic on the canal is light.)

Grimsby Beach/Mosaic Monday

Colourful board and batten cottages near Grimsby Beach, Ontario

Elaborate gingerbread trims these cottages built at the turn of the nineteenth century.  After the Second World War these cottages fell into disrepair but beginning in the 1990s many of the dilapidated cottages began to be renovated and painted in bright colours. Many of them are now lived in year round. Aren't they fun?

Stained Glass/Shadow Shot Sunday

Glass bird and shadow

I think this bird might be a dove. What do you think?

Another glass bird and shadow in window

I'm pretty sure the second bird is supposed to be a hummingbird...but NOT the ruby-throated hummingbird that we see here from mid May through mid September.
